The Department maintains very close relations with the 24 UNESCO Offices situated in Africa (Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Côte dIvoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe) (go to site www.unesco.org/general/fre/about/office/africa.html). Special attention has been paid to the establishment of UNESCO Offices in countries in conflict or post-conflict situations. These Offices are responsible, in liaison with the National Commissions for UNESCO of the countries with which they deal, for the proper conduct of the activities carried out in the country concerned, and they request support from the Priority Africa Department with a view to meeting Member States requests more rapidly. Regular meetings are organized with their relevant officials for exchanges of views on the various aspects of their functions. The Offices also play an important part in the UNSIA context, where they are called on to heighten awareness among African governments and mobilize extrabudgetary funds. All the field offices established in Africa come under the joint authority of the Priority Africa Department and the programme sector which has administrative responsibility for them.
