The Priority Africa Department helped to organize and participated in the fourth African Afro-American Summit (Harare, 21-25 July 1997), the aim of which was to promote economic exchanges between Africa and the African diaspora in the United States. At this Summit, attended by some 4,000 participants, including 20 African Heads of State, UNESCO signed a partnership agreement with OAU and IFESH concerning the Programme of Support to Educational Rehabilitation in Africa (PROSERA). Its numerous workshops conducted their studies on topics suggested by UNESCO: art and culture, education, the culture of peace, communication and the media, and issues concerning women. The Priority Africa Department similarly helped to organize and participated in the fifth African African-American Summit (Accra, 17-21 May 1999).
