2012 marque le 40e anniversaire de la Convention du patrimoine mondial, l'un des programmes les plus réussis de l'UNESCO et l'un des outils les plus puissants pour la préservation du patrimoine. Presque universellement adoptée, avec 188 pays signataires, la Convention est unique en ce sens qu'elle combine la protection du patrimoine culturel et naturel dans un seul instrument. Depuis son adoption par la Conférence générale de l'UNESCO de 1972, la Liste du patrimoine mondial n'a cessé de croître pour atteindre 936 sites inscrits pour leur valeur universelle exceptionnelle dans 153 pays du monde.


The World Heritage Convention Mission

2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention, one of UNESCO's most successful programmes and one of the most powerful tools for heritage preservation. Almost universally adopted, with 188 signatory countries, the Convention is unique in that it combines the protection of cultural and natural heritage in one instrument. Since its adoption by the General Conference of UNESCO in 1972, the World Heritage List has grown to include 936 sites inscribed for their outstanding universal value in 153 countries around the world
