The National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina
During the night of 25 August 1992, the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Sarajevo, was intentionally destroyed by gunners occupying the hills surrounding the city. The fire ignited by grenades completely destroyed the historical library building and most of its collections of about 2 million volumes.
At its 27th General Conference, UNESCO was given the mandate to assist in the restoration of the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina as the symbol for the multicultural, multiethnic and multireligious character of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
