In 1543 a Portuguese vessel dropped anchor in Japan for the first time. This was to mark the start of expansion in the Far East. New trade routes opened up and intense cultural exchange took place.
The event was rocorded on a large collection of screens illustrated by Japanese artists, creating an ancient snap shot of the meeting of two worlds.
