Step by Step is a programme to help parents prepare their children under 8 for school. Step programmes are adapted to different age and cultural groups (travelers, gypsies, refugees and immigrants) and available in the language of choice. Step by Step provides parents with weekly assistance at home or in local community centre where easy to use exercises, worksheets and other materials adapted to local needs are given out. Home visitors demonstrate and explain the exercises. The Programme, set up by Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports, is run by the Averroes Foundation European Centre for Early Childhood Development and the Family, in cooperation with UNESCO.
