Aachen was once Charlemagne's favourite residence.The imperial palace included the Coronation Chamber and the Palace Chapel, which, even while it was being built in the last decade of the eighth century, was looked upon as a wonder. The monumental dome is regarded as the first large dome to be built in the High Middle Ages.The crypt, which houses the Cathedral's treasures, is unique in Central Europe.
