Probably build around 800 A.D., this 30-metre-high Buddhist holy place in central Java served as a pilgrim shrine and as a display of magnificence by the kings of the Sailendra dynasty. With its
innumerable stone reliefs, its stupas and masterly statues of Buddha, Borobudur is the greatest example of Indonesian religious art. The site was probably abandoned in the fifteenth century as a result of the conversion of lndonesia to Islam, but it is likely that it had lost importance as early as the tenth century.
