CONFINTEA PAYS TRIBUTE TO PAULO FREIRE AND DAME NITA BARROW: CHAMPIONS OF EMPOWERMENT

Hamburg (Germany) July 16 - UNESCO’s Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA) currently taking place in Hamburg will pay a tribute to Paulo Freire (Brazil 1921 - 1997) and Dame Nita Barrow (Barbados 1916 - 1995), two life-long champions of human rights and empowerment of the disenfranchised, in a ceremony on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Congress Centrum Hamburg.

Former UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, representing the Director-General of UNESCO, Federico Mayor, will chair the ceremony which will feature short video presentations and a series of speeches.

Speakers at the ceremony will include ministers and government representatives from Columbia and Barbados, a member of the Paulo Freire Institute and Paulo Freire’s widow, as well as representatives of non-governmental organisations and a migrant worker.

Paulo Freire developed a political approach to adult learning which enables the disenfranchised to acquire both skill and power. Despite imprisonment and 16 years in exile, his commitment on behalf of the disenfranchised, expressed in several books, remained unflinching throughout his life. He also worked closely with UNESCO on literacy and education and was due to attend the Hamburg Conference on Adult Education.

The former West Indian Governor General of Barbados, Dame Nita Barrow, was a life-long champion of gender justice, community service and human rights. She fought for adult learning and women’s rights throughout her career in health care - and worked as a nurse, midwife and administrator for many years - at the World Council of Churches and at the Young Women’s Christian Association as well as President of the leading non-governmental International Council for Adult Education.

LA CONFINTEA REND HOMMAGE A PAULO FREIRE ET A NITA BARROW, DEFENSEURS DES DEFAVORISES

Hambourg (Allemagne), 17 juillet - La Conférence de l’UNESCO sur l’éducation des adultes (CONFINTEA), qui se tient actuellement à Hambourg, rendra aujourd’hui hommage au Brésilien Paulo Freire (1921-1997) et à Nita Barrow, des Barbades (1916-1995), deux champions des droits de l’homme ayant consacré leur vie aux défavorisés, au cours d’une cérémonie qui aura lieu à 17h 30 au Congress Centrum de Hambourg.

L’ancien Secrétaire général de l’ONU, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, représentant le Directeur général de l’UNESCO, Federico Mayor, présidera la cérémonie comprenant la présentation de courts films vidéos et une série d’allocutions.

A cette cérémonie d’hommage devraient intervenir des ministres et des représentants des gouvernements de Colombie et des Barbades, un membre de l’Institut Paulo Freire, la veuve de l’éducateur brésilien, ainsi que des représentants d’organisations non gouvernementales et un travailleur migrant.

Paulo Freire élabora une approche politique de l’éducation des adultes visant à ouvrir aux populations défavorisées l’accès à des compétences et à plus de pouvoir. En dépit d’une incarcération et de 16 ans d’exil, son engagement auprès des défavorisés, exprimé dans plusieurs ouvrages, demeura inébranlable tout au long de sa vie. Aussi collabora-t-il étroitement avec l’UNESCO dans le domaine de l’alphabétisation et de l’éducation. Il était attendu à la Conférence internationale sur l’éducation des adultes, à Hambourg.

Ancien Gouverneur général des Barbades, Nita Barrow, consacra sa vie à l’égalité des sexes, au travail communautaire et aux droits de l’homme. Elle milita pour l’éducation des adultes et se fit l’avocate des femmes tout au long de sa carrière dans le domaine de la santé: en tant qu’infirmière, sage-femme et administratrice, pendant de longues années, au Conseil mondial des églises et à l’Association des jeunes femmes chrétiennes, ainsi qu’au Conseil international pour l’éducation des adultes, une organisation non-gouvernementale.
