PORTO’S VINEYARDS, TSODILO, NEW LANARK
AND SALTAIRE:
NEW SITES ADDED TO UNESCO’S WORLD HERITAGE LIST
Helsinki
(Finland), December 14 – The
rock art of Tsodilo (Botswana), the region of Alto Douro (Portugal),
renowned for the production of port, and two villages in the United
Kingdom, New Lanark and Saltaire, are among the new sites that
today joined the ranks of those on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
In
total, 13 new cultural sites were inscribed today, adding to the
six new natural sites and to 12 inscriptions of cultural sites
announced yesterday (see previous press releases). With these
final inscriptions, the World Heritage Committee, which has been
holding its 25th annual meeting since December 11 in
Helsinki under the chair of Henrik Lilius of Finland, completed
its new inscriptions on the World Heritage List.
The List now comprises 554 cultural sites, 144 natural
sites and 23 mixed sites which brings the total number of sites
inscribed to 721. They are situated in 124 States Parties to the
1972 Convention. This year, sites in Botswana and Israel appear
on the World Heritage List for the first time.
The
final cultural sites inscribed are the following:

Tugendhat
Villa in Brno (Czech Republic)
Zollverein
Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen (Germany)
Old
City of Acre (Israel)
Villa d’Este, Tivoli (Italy)
Vat
Phou and Associated Ancient Settlements within the Champasak Cultural
Landscape
(Lao People’s Democratic Republic)
Royal
Hill of Ambohimanga (Madagascar)
Alto
Douro Wine Region (Portugal)
Aranjuez
Cultural Landscape (Spain)
Tombs
of Buganda Kings at Kasubi (Uganda)
Derwent
Valley Mills (United Kingdom)
Saltaire
(United Kingdom)
New
Lanark (United Kingdom)
It
was also decided to extend sites already on the List. They are:
the Painted Churches in the Troodos Region (Cyprus), extension
to include the Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour; and
the Mudejar Architecture of Aragon (Spain), extension to site
formerly called Mudejar Architecture of Teruel.
This

inscribed sites.
