Paris, April 3 (No.2001-52) - A group of demonstrators representing the Committee of Solidarity with Political Prisoners in Turkey was received by the Deputy Director-General of UNESCO and by the Director of the Office of Koïchiro Matsuura, the Director-General of UNESCO.

The demonstrators handed to the officials a petition in which they denounced human rights violations allegedly committed in Turkish prisons against political prisoners, many of whom are reported to be in a critical situation.

The representatives of the Director-General promised to inform the latter, currently on mission, of the urgency of the situation and to approach the Turkish authorities as well as the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights, in Geneva, about the complaints and files submitted to them.
