AND ADVANCES MARKING THE 161ST EXECUTIVE BOARD SESSION
The 161st session of UNESCO’s Executive
Board, chaired by Sonia Mendieta de Badaroux (Honduras), ended yesterday after
having agreed on a refocused programme which constitutes a significant advance
in the Organization’s reform and several major initiatives notably aiming to
protect cultural diversity and the heritage of humanity, as well as to help
reconciliation in the Middle East.

MURDER OF JOURNALIST MILAN PANTIC IN YUGOSLAVIA
UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro
Matsuura today condemned the murder of Yugoslav journalist Milan Pantic, who
reported on criminal affairs and corporate corruption for Belgrade daily Vecerneje
Novosti, calling the assassination “a heinous crime against an
individual and an outrage against freedom of information.”

“Connect with the World Wide Web of
Life” is the theme chosen by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
for this year’s World Environment Day, June 5. As the Organization in charge
of science and education, UNESCO is involved in this theme, as it seeks to
foster study, experience-sharing and awareness about our fragile environment.
