UNESCO CONDEMNS MURDER OF ALGERIAN JOURNALIST AIT-ADDA

Paris, July 1 {No. 97-103} - UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor today condemned the assassination of Algerian television journalist, Louisa Aït-Adda who was killed by armed assailants on June 26 in the centre of Algiers. According to press reports, Ms Aït-Adda had previously said that she felt her life was in danger.

"The murder of Louisa Aït-Adda confirms the fact that in Algeria - as elsewhere, unfortunately - journalists are all too often the designated victims of those who have declared war on the freedom of speech which UNESCO defends everywhere in the world. I condemn this assassination and extend my condolences to her family and colleagues," Mr Mayor declared.

According to French non-governmental organisation Reporters Sans Frontières this latest killing brings to 58 the number of journalists killed in Algeria since the murder of Tahar Djaout on June 2, 1993.
