REGIONAL COOPERATION: AFRICA

Several regional co-ordination bodies exist on the African continent:

In Northern Africa the Union of Maghreb Voluntary Associations (UMAV) ensures the co-ordination between the voluntary service organizations in the Maghreb countries.

In Western Africa a co-ordination called UWAVWA was established in 1970 in Accra, Ghana. In 2005 a networking meeting took place in Togo on the fringe of the CCIVS IT Africa seminar hosted by FAGAD Togo, with the support of the UNESCO Infoyouth programme. As a consequence of this meeting a number of Western African organisations are currently re-defining the co-ordination mechanism in the region. For more information or to join the e-mail group created for Western African voluntary service organisations please contact FAGAD as co-ordinator of the follow-up committee.

In Southern Africa the Southern African Workcamps Co-ordination (SAWC) was created in 1994 and comprises 8 organisations from Zambia (YAZ), Zimbabwe (ZWA), Botswana (BWA), South Africa (QPC), Lesotho (LWA), Malawi (AYISE–MWAI), Mozambique (AJUDE) and Swaziland (SWCA). You can find the contacts of all organisations in the directory. For more information on the network, contact Botswana Workcamps Association (BWA).

In Eastern Africa the Eastern African Workcamps Association (EAWA) was established in 1995 as a follow-up of a Conference of Voluntary Service Organisations in Kampala, Uganda in 1995. EAWA has 17 member organisations: 7 in Uganda, 7 in Kenya, 2 in Tanzania and 1 in Sudan. EAWA organises frequent seminars on capacity building and training and publishes a newsletter. The organization has a permanent secretariat based in Kampala, Uganda. For more information please contact the co-ordinator and CCIVS Vice President, Samuel Waddimba.

You can also find reports on some activities organised by these organisations in the different sections of this site.
