Schools of Universal Language (S O U L)

 

The second student-based art exposition in the framework of UNESCO's SOUL Project was held at the Theosophical Society in London, England on the 21st May 1999. The exposition centered around 49 exhibits - pottery, collage drawings and water colours submitted by students from seventy schools in the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) network. The exhibits were based on the Chinese works of art from to be found in the Michael Gulbenkian collection, London (UK).

Mr Colin N. Power, Deputy Director-General for Education made an introductory speech based on the principles of a Culture of Peace aspromoted by UNESCO. Mr Derek Blackman, Director-General, International Baccalaureate Organization; Mr Donald Atkinson, Treasurer of the Theosophical Society and Ms Ibtissam AI-Bassam, Director, Section for Teacher Education (UNESCO), and SOUL Project Officer, all spoke and expressed their commitment to continue their collaborative efforts to promote the culture of peace.
The students' works were, by common concent, of a very high standard. One can only say that they rose to the occasion of a school-based international UNESCO exhibition, in which students were all pleased to participate. Many students expressed their wish to auction their works to raise funds for charity organizations.
