Call to nominate your representatives to 'Youth Visioning for Island Living'
8 September 2004

The deadline for islands to submit the names of their youth representatives to participate in the UN meeting in Mauritius 'Youth Visioning for Island Living' (7-12 January 2005) is 30 September 2004. Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are invited to select two youth participants to go to Mauritius. Islands in the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Pacific regions that are not SIDS are also invited to submit the names of youth participants, and these applications will be considered on a space-available basis. Selection of the youth should be based on the following criteria:

  1. Age 17-23 years
  2. Gender - where there is more than 1 participant from a country, there must be gender balance
  3. Where a country has outer islands, then they should be reflected in the participant selection
  4. Ability to follow through with activities after Mauritius is a key consideration.

Please ensure that the two youth representatives selected by your country each fill in the registration form.

Funding for expenses in Mauritius for the youth representatives (board, meals and local transport) has been covered. And while countries are being asked to seek travel funds for their representatives, some limited assistance for travel funds may be available from partner organizations. More information will be available after 30 September 2004.

'Youth Visioning for Island Living' allows young islanders* to articulate how they want their islands to develop in the future and how they plan to help make this happen. There are three themes:

Life and love in islands - island lifestyles and cultures My island home - safeguarding island environments Money in my pocket - economic and employment opportunities

And, three stages:

Stage 1: Preparatory activities (January - Dec 2004) Youth coordinators initiate, plan and undertake preparatory activities: local meetings and discussions, contributing information to the website on activities/projects relating to the three themes, media promotion, fund raising activities, inter-regional web-based discussions and chat rooms

Stage 2: Youth participation at the UN meeting in Mauritius (7 - 12 January 2005) Youth participants** meet in Mauritius to focus on the three themes: 'Life and love in islands', 'My island home', and 'Money in my pocket'; (1) discuss their concerns; (2) share information about ongoing and planned activities, and (3) shape their vision, backed up by specific proposals, for future implementation. The outcomes will be presented to the main UN meeting. At the same time there will be opportunities to share experiences, promote cultural understanding, interact with organizations represented at the main UN meeting, and participate in debates and side-events

Stage 3: Prioritisation and implementation of youth visioning activities/projects (January 2005 onwards) Youth representatives to the Mauritius meeting share their experiences and the outcome of the meeting with youth back home; hold consultations to prioritise activities for local implementation; seek and obtain funding for implementation where necessary; regularly communicate with other islands on implementation; provide material on implementation (text, photos, audio files, etc) to the website.
