Preparations begin for Recreational Day for Disabled Youth
9 December 2005

A new Youth Visioning project has recently been established in Mauritius. Often, disabled young people do not feel included in society. Led by Qadir Mahamoodally, the activities planned as part of this project seek to bring together a diverse group of young people to help integrate disabled youth into society in a festive environment.

Partners involved in this initiative include youth organizations and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. They plan to hold a day of recreational games and activities, coinciding with Christmas celebrations, for a minimum of 100 youths, especially including disabled youths.

Also involved is the Association of Parents of Mal-adjusted Children of the Island of Mauritius (APEIM)*, a national organization of parents which is working, among other things, for the integration of handicapped children into regular schools.

The project team is currently finalizing the site for the Recreational Day, dancing groups for the cultural shows and the purchases of prizes and Christmas gifts for the participants.
