Grenada crafts recycling project
16 February 2008

Grenada: After completing their HIV/AIDS capacity building project, The Youth Empowerment Foundation has continued to be active in their community.

"The paper recycling project mentioned in our report begins this weekend. One of the groups trained in the HIV program management course (De Blandeau Youth Group) and one other group (Post Royal Youth Group) will be trained to create baskets for the storage of spice products (spice baskets) to be used in the tourism industry. These items are being created from shredded waste paper collected from Government Ministries.

This project is a collaborative effort between the OAS, Grenada Arts Council, Government of Grenada, the Youth Empowerment Foundation and other community based organizations and private sector agencies in the tourism industry. Marketing arrangements are being sorted to facilitate the sale of the products created by these groups after the training. Towards this end, the Craft Coordinator at the Arts Council has just returned from a craft expo in the United States. Particular interest is placed on ensuring that the baskets, when produced, would be importable since they are targeted to be used as containers for spices sold to tourists. There is now a real opportunity for the trainees to organize themselves into a sort of cooperative and start an income-earning project. Other groups will be targeted in due course.

Also, by way of further follow-up activities with the trained groups: this weekend a leadership and professionalism training workshop is being held with some of the targeted groups. This is being sponsored by community contributions." - Clifton
