Role Playing Game: My Island Home, San Andres
28 February 2007

Young people from Star Teen and The Rebels youth group in San Andres are developing a role playing game, 'My Island Home', to create awareness among native islanders of the impact of development on their islands. The game forms part of a larger series of activities to encourage the community in taking action through 'Best Management Practices' to protect their island environment.

So far, the group has designed a programme that includes workshops to educate other youth on land tenure and economic development. This will allow them to understand the social, economic and environmental issues facing their island to help them create the game. Although it will be aimed at native islanders from Old Providence and Santa Catalina, it can also be played in other islands around the world.

"Things have been moving slower than expected. We have been doing much more to prepare workshops to have the young people highly involved. The idea is that they are working on the workshop modules and we have been having many workshops and meetings to work with them to do so. But we are coming along well. Their computer skills are very low; low internet skills but they are very enthusiastic".
