Tonga National Canoe Festival
29 September 2007

Press Release: The Tonga National Youth Congress - in partnership with master carver Sitiveni Fehoko - is proud to present the Tonga National Canoe Festival to be held 1st - 13th October.

This inaugural event - supported by the Tonga Traditions Committee, the Ministry of Education, Women and Culture and the Ministry of Training, Employment, Youth and Sports - will be an opportunity for Tongan youth from the five island groups to rediscover and proudly display the style of canoe carving unique to their island. Each team will work under the tutelage of a master carver , allowing unique cultural skills and knowledge to be passed down through the generations.

The aim of the Tonga National Canoe Festival is to revive the almost lost art of Tongan canoe carving and to celebrate Tonga's canoe history.

The youth can be seen carving their canoes during the first week of October at the corner of One Way and Wellington roads in the centre of town.
