Youth Visioning for Island Living
May-June 2005

Youth Fiji Newsletter, vol 8, Issue 1, May-June 2005

On 10-14 January 2005, the representatives of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) met in Mauritius with other countries as well as various national, regional and interregional organizations to review progress over the last 10 years and to plan future action.

They voiced their concerns on the need to be fully involved in the review of SIDS and contributed to the future development of their islands through the 'Youth Visioning of Island Living' process which was held in parallel with the SIDS meeting.

The Visioning process and discussion centered around three broad thems; i) Live and love in islands - island lifestyles and cultures, ii) My island home - safeguarding island environments and iii) Money in my pocket - economic and employment opportunities.

23 year old Catherine Nisha who participated in the Youth Parliament in 2004 was nominated to represent Fiji at the Youth Forum. She teamed up with UNICEF Suva Based Communications Officer, Donna Hoeder.

The Declaration called upon the delegations at the meeting to recognize and take into account their deliberations and national plans of action the concerns and specific needs of youths living in small islands. The young people also made country commitments on activities they will do upon returning to their small nations. Fiji had committed itself to HIV prevention and awareness programmes under the 'Life and Love in islands' theme.
