Background:
There is a need to raise the awareness of young
people about the dangers of HIV/AIDS.
We decided that a good
way of doing this would be to share information
in the context of playing sports that the youth
enjoy.
Objectives:
- Encourage the young people to develop new friendships
- Circulate information on HIV/AIDS in a clear
and simple manner
- Give concrete and truthful examples to encourage
the young people to reflect on the subject
Activities:
- Hold a tournament for football and basketball
among youth in Achada Grande Frente in Praia,
and distribute HIV/AIDS educational materials,
including stickers and balloons with relevant
messages, information fliers and condoms to youth
attending the event.
- Conduct a one-day conference
to provide further information and discussion
about HIV/AIDS, to show a film on HIV/AIDS and
to give out the trophies to the winners of the
sports event.
- With a simple questionnaire,
interview 30 young people before the sports tournament
to determine their level of knowledge about HIV/AIDS
and its prevention; and repeat the questionnaire
to the same 30 young people after the tournament
and the conference.
- Provide photographs and
at least 60 minutes video footage of the sports
tournament and the conference.
- Publicise the tournament
and the conference through local radio, television
and newspapers.
- Investigate and report
on ways of making the activity an annual event,
possibly with local support.
