Background:
The goal is to preserve the coastal environment for future generations.
Vidhuvaru is a NGO based on one of the islands of the Maldives named 'Naifaru'
in the Lhaviyani atoll. There are about 4000 people on the island and the main economic activitiy is fishing. Vidhuvaru have run a few small projects to create awareness among the community and some training programmes.
Objectives:
- Awareness campaign on critical environment issues facing the island;
- Mobilize the community to initiate and address their own problems;
- Protect the island environment and preserve for the future.
Activities:
- Raise awareness among the people of Naifaru Island about critical environmental issues that the island is facing and the need to take action to preserve their island home for future generations;
- Plan, organize and hold a photo exhibition on the recent negative environmental impacts on the island and identify solutions on how to tackle the existing problems;
- Conduct a one day workshop with all stakeholders to address the challenges identified during the exhibition, particularly the problem of erosion and identify ways to prevent erosion;
- Under the guidance of experts, in line with environmental laws and regulations, the island land use plan, acquire and plant the coastal vegetation;
- Evaluate the effectiveness of coastal vegetation on reducing erosion
- Publicise all the activities through local radio, television, newspapers and leaflets;
- Investigate and report on ways of continuing this activity in the future;
