HIV/AIDS Awareness Workshop, Mauritius

Who's involved:
Project leader: Qadir Mahamoodally

Main partner: Savanne Regional Youth Council

Other organisations:
- Ministry of Youth and Sport

- National Youth Council

Timeframe:
November 2006 - July 2007

Theme:
Life and love in islands

Background:
'In Mauritius, we do not really educate our youth about the problem of HIV/AIDS. Youngsters are getting so busy in their educational life that they do not have time to learn about it. And even parents want their children to do their best to get good results in their exams that they are forgeting this dangerous uncurable disease. So I, together with my youth group members want to organise a special seminar for youth leaders in Mauritius so as to make them aware about this dangerous disease. And through media and press, we want to show all the people in Mauritius the importance of life and the effect of this disease on our island.'
- Qadir

Objectives:
- Preserved our society from being destroyed by HIV/AIDS;

- Help youngsters to understand the true meaning of sexuality and the different causes which might lead to HIV/AIDS;

- Make the young generation aware of how these diseases are destroying the whole world;

- Show different ways to prevent us from being affected by this dangerous disease.

Activities:
- Organise a 3-day residential workshop for 50 youth leaders from different regions of Mauritius to discuss HIV/AIDS, to create awareness among Mauritian youth and to plan follow-up activities;

- Invite professionals to the workshop to discuss and advise the youth leaders on how to address HIV/AIDS in their region;

- Evaluate the impact of the activity by asking a minimum of 50 youth to complete a survey on their knowledge of HIV/AIDS before and after the workshop;

- Assess the post-workshop HIV/AIDS activities that are to be undertaken by the youth leaders in their regions, and document the results in a report;

- Organise a prize-giving ceremony for the best HIV/AIDS follow-up activities;

- Publicise all the activities through local radio, television and newspapers;

- Investigate and report on ways of continuing this activity in the future;

Progress Reports:
16 April 2007
"We have found 3 interesting projects [post workshop activities run my partcipants] and there budget also are not that big. So we want to contribute partly in them so as to motivate the youngsters. They are:

- A mini concert regrouping young artists to perform in a village called Souillac. The youngsters are more interested in music.  So its more easier to regroup them by organising a mini concert. During the concert itself, a message on HIV/AIDS will be passed to them. We will encourage them to live life in the way it should be and discourage them to do things which might lead them to AIDS.
- A football tournament at Camp-diable. We want to regroup the maximum number of people, both yougsters and adults to play football and then we will pass the message there.  We will also seize this opportunity to distribute pamplets regarding HIV/AIDS.
- a community based program in a deprived area known as cite EDC."

"I am pleased to inform you that today our residential workshop ended with great success.  It was a fantastic experience and above all, we are going to make some changes in the program because there were more participants than we expected.  We got 85 in all instead of 50.  It was a new experience for me and my team as organiser.  I will now be working on the report and I will send it to you soon.  Thanks a lot for all your support and help."
