Traditional Treasures – Preserving and reviving the Niuean language,
Niue
Who's
involved:
Project leader: Lynsey Talagi
Main partner: Nukutaha Christchurch, New Zealand
Other organisations:
- Christchurch Fuata Niue, New Zealand
Timeframe:
April 2007 - October 2007
Theme:
Life and Love in Islands
Background:
"In the group I am going to do the project with, there are about 20 youth. Members of the community have said that there are likely to be 50 youth of niuean ancestry in Christchurch. At the moment we are preparing for the national niuean conference in September/October, this includes language. Another group is doing a local language conference for the Christchurch region, one I am no longer part of. That other group wanted to teach the classes with everyone involved in a class, ie toddlers to elderly. Some youth were not too keen for that idea and preferred youth to be separated from children, elderly, etc. So that other group will be doing that type of language teaching. Now, my form of publicity will be through word of mouth, radio, tv, flyers and newspapers and will not involve the local language conference."

Objectives:
- The New Zealand born Niuean youth and community in Christchurch to become fluent in the Niuean language
- The New Zealand born Niuean youth and community in Christchurch to successfully communicate in Niuean through speech, writing, dance, etc.
- An annual Niuean speech and writing competition for Christchurch (perhaps to correspond with constitution celebrations in October)
- The New Zealand born Niuean youth to participate in the Hulaaga Vagahau Niue Fono (about Niue language) in Christchurch 5 & 6 October 2007
Activities:
- Conduct classes in conversational Niuean language for a minimum of 50 young people, and at least two other activities to promote Niuean culture;
- Hold a speech and writing competition and award prizes;
- Publicise all the activities through local radio, television and newspapers;
- Evaluate the impact of the activity by asking a minimum of 60 youth to complete a survey on their knowledge of Niuean language before and after the completion of the course; analyse and report on the results of the evaluation;
- Investigate and report on ways of continuing this activity in the future.
Progress
Reports:
5 September 2007
"Our classes started at the end of May. We've got two main tutors, myself included, and the other 5 help out when they can.
So far we've had 16 people attend classes, including youth. There is interest in the classes but we are yet to see those people attend. We've had to cancel our Saturday classes for September due to lack of numbers. I suppose we will have to contact the community and find out what we could do that would encourage them to attend..." >> more
