Timeframe:
September 2006 - December 2007
Theme:
Life and Love in Islands
Background:
The ultimate goal here is to reduce or to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS in which is growing very fast and respect themselves and appreciate each other.
This organization is newly formed. The formation started in late September, 2006 up until now. We are almost to the completion of registering it and we should open the organization’s account by May this year.
The Motivational factor to the formation of this organization is when I (Norman Wai) attended the First Pacific Youth Festival last year in July in Tahiti – French Polynesia. Later in September 2006 I also attended the First National Youth Summit in Prot Moresby, our nation’s capital city.
After attending these events, I decided to help all youth in the province. I called several youths who were willing to help out in the formation of this organization.
Objectives:
- Will practice preventive measures to avoid the spread of HIV/AIDS.
- They will disseminate the information in their peer groups and their family members and their Community members.
- Appreciate and show love and concern for people living with HIV/AIDS.
- Treat each other (both male and female) as equal or promote Gender Equity.
- Pass information on living positive for those living with HIV/AIDS Virus.
Activities:
- Organise a one-day in-house training session with Provincial Aids Council officers to train at least 10 youth volunteers on the latest HIV/AIDS information including statistics, access to prevention, transmission and care, gender issues and to receive materials (brochures, posters and condoms etc). Forward a brief report on the latest HIV/AIDS information in Papua New Guinea;
- Organise meetings with the 10 'trained' youth volunteers to disseminate HIV/AIDS information and distribute stickers, posters, brochures and condoms to students and staff members of targeted institutions;
- Ensure that the students and staff members will further disseminate the information to others as organized by student representatives;
- Provide information on positive living and good nutrition for healthy lifestyles for people living with HIV/AIDS;
- Run 8 radio spots over 8 weeks with the local radio station to spread awareness of HIV/AIDS;
- Publicise all the activities through local radio, television and newspapers;
- Evaluate the impact of the activity by asking a minimum of 100 school youth to complete a survey on their knowledge of HIV/AIDS before and after the presentations by the volunteers; analyse and report on the results of the evaluation;
- Investigate and report on ways of continuing this activity in the future.
Progress
Reports:
29 November 2007
"We have reached 28 institutions now and 2 more to go. We are also facing difficulty to visit them as most institutions are having close-up parties and some are on holidays. However, we will try our best to visit the remaining institutions in time.
Hope to reach our target institutions of 30 or so by the end of next week and should look foward to compile a report back to you soon." - Norman
19 November 2007
"Today we had an interview with our local radio station for the evenings news. Hopefully our stories should also be on our daily papers the post courier and the national papers this week as well.
Due to wheather problems especially here in PNG it made it difficult to reach some of the targeted institutions but we are managing to over come these obstacles." - Norman
2 November 2007
"We started our project with an inhouse training and followed by visiting institutions. So far we attended four institutions within the province. We are yet to visit the remaining 26 institutions, which will be done in the next three weeks.
I shall inform you about some problems we faced but are not an obstacle as we tried our best to get the project on the ground and we are into the project.
Transportation
Transportation was a major problem that we faced when the Provincial Aids Council's transport was stolen some two months back. Now they have no vehicle to assist us or in implementing other programs. They are handicapped in assisting us as we previously agreed.
We sought for assistance for a car and luckily we had a support from a father who owns a 25 seater coaster bus who gave his vehicle for free but we had to refuel it with fuel to implement our project. We are relieved now.
Now we only need to refuel the vehicle and visit the institutions to carryout awareness. There are no other cost of using the transport.
Time
Time is another factor that is catching up with us. As proposed we thought of reaching 30 institutions in two months, however, due to school holidays to which are coming up and the final students assessments in schools are in progress we don't seem to have enough time.
We are trying our best to reach the remaining institutions within the remaining schooling hours in the next three weeks or four if possible.
Some of the institutions that we scheduled to visit have a tight timing with their programs. As a result they have no time to spare for us especially in town schools. We then made arrangements with institutions in rural areas that we are now visiting. We will reach our target of visiting 30 institutions in the province before school holidays begin.
The above are the main problems we are facing but have learnt to overcome them so we will reach our target and achieve our objectives."
- Norman
29 October 2007
"One of our major obstacle that we're facing now is that we are running against time. This is because we received the funds late but that will not hinder us from achieving our objectives as set. We are in the middle of our activites and for the next three weeks we are tightly sheduled to visit the remaining institutions (30 in total) before students go for their holiday breaks which is due in the first week of December." - Norman
19 October 2007
"All necessary arrangements are in place and we'll start off our project next week with our inhouse training and then follow on with the visitation of the 30 institutions.
We shall update you as we progress through." - Norman
