Project
Joy - Chinese New Year, Singapore
Who's
involved:
Project leader: Geraldine Ong
Main partner: Youth
Challenge Singapore
Other organisations:
Redhill Senior Citizens' Moral Society
Timeframe:
February - May 2005
Theme:
Life and Love in Islands
Background:
The scope of the project will include people like
the student volunteers who will learn from this
experience, the elderly who will be brought joy
as well as "by-standers" who will learn about
the elderly in our society and then start to do
something for them as well when they see their
inadequate living conditions.
Student volunteers will
prepare a steamboat feast for 105 disadvantaged
elderly persons to celebrate the Chinese Lunar
New Year.
The dinner will consist of
supplies that the volunteers will buy themselves
at a wet market and prepare. The volunteers will
also distribute 8-dollar 'angbaos' and pairs of
mandarin oranges to herald the start of a good
year for the elderly. Performances which include
singing and the playing of Chinese instruments
will also be given.
Objectives:
- To bring some light and warmth into the lives
of a group of lonely, elderly people during the
Chinese New Year festivities, as many of them
have been neglected and abandoned after having
contributed a great deal to society.
- To enable the student volunteers
involved to enrich themselves spiritually and
mentally from this experience so that they will
want to continue helping the elderly in the future.
- To teach student volunteers
the value of learning outside the classroom walls
as well as learning from the heart.
- To inculcate the student
volunteers with organisation, leadership, rational
and critical thinking skills coupled with compassion
in the planning of the event.
- To bridge the stark generation
gap by promoting interaction between the young
of today and our elders.
Activities:
- Involve youth from junior colleges throughout
the island in the planning, implementation and
follow-up for an inter-generational celebration
of the Chinese New Year (February 2005), involving
young people and about 80 elderly persons living
alone, and including a feast and cultural event.
- Prepare a report, accompanied
by digital photos, featuring the event.
- Investigate and report
on ways of making the activity an annual event,
possibly with local support.
