Theme:
Life and love in islands

Background:
We want to inform the young people of Tonga and the entire community about the Millennium Development Goals and how these goals specifically relate to the Pacific region and what action can be taken to help achieve these goals.

Objectives:
- Pilot a weekly radio programme for youth that systematically presents each of the 8 MDG's over a ten week period
- Provide a wide range of youth with the opportunity to share their experiences and air their views to both peers and elders in response to radio presentations on MDG's and current local and international issues
- Demonstrate the importance of establishing permanent youth radio as a communication medium for the youth of Tonga
- To provide support and community interest for MDG projects run by individual youth and youth groups.

Activities:
- Purchase a mini disc digital recorder
- Meet with relevant local organisations to gather resources and research concerning the latest developments in promoting MDG's in Tonga
- Prepare upbeat, informative and challenging radio scripts, discussion, music and On the Spot interviews that address Tongan awareness of and involvement with MDG's
- Create fliers, posters, and press release for radio, TV, and newspaper that promote the show and give the public information on how and when they can to tune into On The Spot radio
- Involve the media further by inviting Tonga National Broadcasting Corp oration to give local news coverage of selected On The Spot interviews
- Carry out a random questionnaire survey of at least 200 youth prior to and on completion of the 10 week On The Spot series to ascertain interest in and awareness of MDG's

Progress Reports:
24 July 2006
The van is already painted and we are attracting much attention as we are driving on the road but it recently broke down again. The shirts are all done and it looks good so there are 100 yellow MDG shirts which will soon be on the streets, in the homes and on the backs of 100 lucky youth. Our first radio show was supposed to premier last week on the 19th. We were ready but the radio station was not. The show was cancelled from the AM station and played about 15 minutes late on FM and then cut short. This week’s show is cancelled due to a 10 day ban that has been placed on all shows because of the recent death of our prince. In the meantime we are still preparing our shows and trying to get experience and training in editing the material. Success story of the week: a dedicated team member from one of the outer villages who has found he can’t help us out with the show as much because he lives too far out has decided to take awareness into his own hands and will be starting workshops in his village with the unemployed youth every weekend… and we think we have a venue to hold regular performances it the future - actual youth implemented shows!!! We are busy looking for other sources of funding towards our dream of setting up something more lasting and sustainable for youth by youth.

We are doing fine .. Tonga radio has given us a good slot .. Wednesdays straight after the evening news and will play it on AM and FM so it reaches all the outer islands !!

The Questionnaire is prepared and ready to go this week and we designed the questions to give us as much info as possible .. will send you a copy plus photos at the end of the week!! We have asked local youth and groups to write songs / rap whatever on the MDG themes and the recording studio we work with has offered to record the sons for them for free if we can use them on the show!! Neat eh!!

Posters and T shirts are in process and we are booked to do the first show on Wednesday Jul 12th .. hopefully have a launch in the mid city car park that afternoon. We had planned to paint our vehicle as it has had environmental themes on it for the past 2 years now time for some MDGs but it has broken down so we are looking for new one fast. talk to you soon !!
