Beaches and dunes are one part of the coastal system, other components include coastal lands and hill slopes (often extending to the watershed), mangroves and salt ponds, seagrass beds and coral reefs. All the components are related and interact with each other. For example, vegetation clearing of the coastal lands and slopes may result in soil and dirt being washed into the sea, this sediment may smother the coral reefs so that they can no longer provide sand to the beach.
