Environment and development in coastal regions and in small islands

The Adriatic perspective

As recommended by the International Seminar on the Urban Development and Fresh Water Resources: Small Coastal Cities, held in Essaouira, Morocco, on 23-26 November 1997, and jointly organized by UNESCO and Moroccan local and national authorities, UVO-ROSTE will provide back up support to the following activities aimed at:

• officially launching the International Network of Small Coastal Cities, with the immediate adhesion of the cities of: Saint Malo (France), Alghero (Sardinia, Italy), Sciacca e Licata (Sicily, Italy), Alexandria (Egypt), Saida (Lebanon), Tunis (Tunisia), Essaouira (Morocco), Odense (Denmark), Esberg (Sweden), Omisalj (Croatia), Kotor (Montenegro, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia), and Tagiio di Pc (Veneto, Italy);
• the signature in the presence of UNESCO specialists and Moroccan Authorities of a series of bilateral agreements between some of the involved Municipalities in order to promote concrete co-operative efforts in the view of solving some of the problems previously indicated.

UVO-ROSTE was requested to act as a focal point of the project in the Adriatic Region, and it is foreseen that, starting from 1998, some concrete actions will be undertaken in this specific region such as:

• International on-site Seminar and Archaeological expertise in Omisaij (Croatia);
• Exploratory expert missions in Albania and Montenegro;
• Promotion of the International Network of Small Coastal Cities in the Adriatic Countries.
