The Republic of Benin

Two specialists from Benin attended the Programme on Man and the Biosphere (MAB) co-sponsored regional conference on ‘Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development’ (Dakar, Senegal, October 1996). Three scientists completed a comprehensive study that contributed to the publication ‘Mangrove Ecosystem Studies in Latin America and Africa’ (UNESCO, 1997). An evaluation of socio-economic activities of the coastal population and their impact on the coastal zone of Benin was initiated in 1997. Four scientists from Benin attended a regional workshop on the ‘Methodology of Data Collection for Coastal Management’ held in Togo in February 1998. An expert from Benin attended a workshop held in Maputo in July 1998 which was organized jointly with the Communication and Education Sectors, and the UNESCO Dakar, Maputo, Nairobi and Pretoria Offices as part of the ‘Pan-African Conference on Sustainable Integrated Coastal Management (PACSICOM)’. The proceedings of the workshop: ‘The Role of Communication and Education for Sustainable Coastal Development’ was published as CSI info 7 in English and French. A student from Benin attended one of the ‘UNESCO Chair in Integrated Coastal Management and Sustainable Development’ courses, given at the University of Dakar, from January to November 1999. An invited speaker from Benin attended a special thematic session of the ‘World Conference on Science’ in Budapest in June 1999. He spoke on traditional ecological knowledge in the ‘Science and Other Systems of Knowledge’ session.
