The Republic of Maldives

A grant was given to raise general public awareness in the Maldives about the ocean and to celebrate the ‘International Year of the Ocean’ (1998).

One person from the Maldives attended a workshop on ‘Furthering Coastal Stewardship in Small Islands’ held in Dominica in July 2001. The results were published as CSI papers 11 ‘Wise Practices for Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Small Islands’. The participant from the Maldives presented an overview of coastal stewardship in the Maldives.

During 2002 discussions were held on the Maldive’s possible participation in the Small Islands Voice project - a project to elicit and broadcast the views of people from small islands on environment and development. A UNESCO consultant visited the islands in November/December 2002 and again in April 2003.

A paper ‘Coastal Land Tenure: A Small-Islands’ Perspective’ was published in March 2003. The situation in the Maldives was compared with that in other small island states and territories.
