The Republic of Malta
Malta hosted the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) workshop on ‘Water, Coastal and Marine Resource Management in Small Island Developing States’ in December 1997; one UNESCO specialist attended. An observer from Malta attended the intersectoral workshop ‘Towards Wise Coastal Development Practices’ held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris in the beginning of December 1998.
A guide ‘Coastal Sand Dunes under Siege a Guide to Conservation for Environmental Managers’ was published in 2002 by the International Environment Institute Foundation for International Studies. The publication was part funded by UNESCO/CSI. Funds for a project, to be executed by the local university, on Malta’s coastal dunes and their habitats were approved by UNESCO in 2002.
