1. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
OBJECTIVES
To assess the role of communication and
education in making development in African coastal regions and
small islands sustainable, and in particular:
- Appreciate key coastal issues in Africa,
the status of such issues in the educational policies and
programmes, and the problem-solving potentials offered by
communication and education.
- Elaborate a communication and
education/training strategy for advocacy,
awareness-raising, information dissemination,
participation, decision-making, interactive knowledge
exchange and problem-solving concerning coastal issues.
The strategy will be based on socio-cultural contexts and
available technical capacities.
METHODOLOGY AND APPROACH
The workshop brought together communication and
education experts with integrated coastal management
practitioners. It consisted of:
- An opening session during which the
overall theme was introduced by specialists in:
integrated coastal management, communication,
primary/secondary education, and higher education.
- Three working group sessions addressing,
in the context of sustainable coastal development:
communication and public awareness, primary and secondary
education, and higher education and training.
- A final session to integrate and summarize
the working groups conclusions for plenary
presentation and mutually reinforcing follow-up actions.
OUTPUT
Proposals for an integrated communication and
education strategy for coastal management contributing to the
elaboration of wise practices for sustainable
development in coastal regions and small islands.
FOLLOW-UP
- Field testing the communication and
education strategy by adding to or reinforcing the
communication and education content of existing
integrated coastal management (ICM) projects and by
incorporating the sustainable coastal development
dimension into communications and formal, non-formal and
continuing education through pilot projects.
- Establishing UNESCO Chairs on
Integrated Management and Sustainable Development
in Coastal Regions and in Small Islands which will
operate in mutually reinforcing relationships with field
project activities and will network through university
twinning arrangements.
