Now available for Latin America and Africa:
UNESCO publication on mangroves

UNESCO has just published a volume, entitled Mangrove Ecosystem Studies in Latin America and Africa, edited by Björn Kjerfve, Luiz Drude de Lacerda and El Hadji Salif Diop and totalling 349 pages (plus prelims). While not an exhaustive treatment of the subject, it is nonetheless a unique collection of papers (twenty-eight, in number) dealing with various aspects of these valuable natural resources in the two vast regions indicated. The publication constitutes the fruition of considerable efforts by the authors, organizers and coordinators of the manuscript project, and was facilitated by support from the International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME) and by the Institute of Tropical Forestry, in Puerto Rico (of the Forest Service, USA's Department of Agriculture).

The manuscript was produced as one result of an activity initiated in 1993. Besides the editing by the above-mentioned specialists, a final review was carried out by Dr. Marta Vannucci, on behalf of ISME, with final editing and copy preparation by Ms Andrea Bullock. The culmination of the project, i.e. the publication of the volume, was accomplished within the programme of UNESCO's transdisciplinary endeavour on Environment and Development in Coastal Regions and in Small Islands (CSI). The papers are presented in the language in which they were submitted, i.e. in English or French.

Distribution: This publication, produced in limited print-run, is being distributed on a targeted basis, in first priority to institutional libraries and documentation centres active in this area of research. Requests for copies (with justifying statement, preferably on letterhead stationery) should be sent to the address listed for the respective region of the requester. Although the publication itself is free of charge, conditions for responding to requests (mailing charges etc.) are established by the individual distributor for the region involved.
