Hazard Impacts on the Caribbean Littoral Environments: Interactions of Human-use and Natural Systems

Jeremy Collymore,
Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency, Barbados

Abstract

The Caribbean Islands are exposed to three types of natural hazards: hurricanes, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. These result in billions of dollars of damage. The damage resulting from the recent hurricanes in some of the islands are described. Hazard impacts on coastal environments must be included in sustainable development agendas. There is an urgent need for an integrated approach to land use planning and development control. Improved valuation methods for natural resources are also needed.
