Venice is home of new UNESCO chair in environmental sciences and management

The Organization's Office in Venice (Italy) provided intellectual and financial support to the launching of the UNESCO Chair in Environmental Sciences and Management at the University of Venice. Professor Yuri Sorokin (Head of the Laboratory of Microplankton, Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Gelendzhik, Russia) was nominated as the first Chair holder, and took up his initial activities as such during first half of 1996. During the second half of the year, Prof. Sorokin began research and training activities at the University's Department of Environmental Sciences. These activities benefited from the logistical support provided by the International Center for Marine Sciences and Technology, located on Sacca Sessola Island in the Venice Lagoon.
