CARIBBEAN - Dominica Activities

Small Islands Voice Youth Internet Forum
Dominican students participate

Students from Marigot Secondary School in Dominica, and other youth as well, have been discussing their views on a variety of issues with young people from other small islands since 2003. Topics favoured by Dominican youth have included crime and violence, especially gangs, problems with unemployment and jobs after school, and the beauty of their nature island.

Many of the contributions show immense pride in their island:

'Dominica, the nature island of the Caribbean…………I must say that Dominica is the place you have to be NOW!'

Nicalda, 2003 (www.sivyouth.org/phase2/?read=34 with username view and password only)

Yet there is also a strong recognition of their island's problems:

'When it comes to employment in my country of Dominica, I must say that our young people are being left out. When you look at the business applications for jobs, there is no way we the young people can apply for these jobs. Managers ask for qualifications that we don't have, and working experience that we also don't have since we have just left school. What is left to do. Some of us are not sure.'
