Sandwatch and River Care Activities

RIVER CARE IN DOMINICA

With the theme 'Youth safeguarding waters' the Youth Development Division of the Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Sports & Youth Affairs, together with the Dominica National Commission for UNESCO and many other partners, are helping to restore and maintain Dominica's freshwater and aquatic resources. These resources are already under threat from indiscriminate cutting of trees along river banks and from pollution in its many forms. The project seeks to engage young people to reverse these trends by positively contributing to the conservation of their natural resources through the River Care programme.

Taking into account the two International Decades: the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) and the Decade for action on Water for Life (2005-2015), this project, starting in 2006, seeks to expand the overall concept of Sandwatch - community action based on sound science - to take into account river systems using techniques that have been developed in Fiji and the Pacific Islands through the River Care Project.

The 'Youth safeguarding waters' initiative has two phases:

  • Summer vacation programme (2006) involving 3,000 primary school youth in monitoring rivers and beaches, waterway clean ups, planting of trees, learning and sharing with their peers and community about the proper methods of garbage disposal, and preservation and beautification of their environment
  • Involving school Environmental Clubs in River Care monitoring activities (2006-7)
