Goodwill Secondary School Small islands Voice Report 2004-5

By

Jahisiah Benoit

The objectives and goals of the Small Islands Voice programme were as follows:

  • Obtain more computers for the IT room
  • Ensure that internet connections are in place
  • Rally a large number of participants for the programme
  • Ensure that the participants actively take part in SIV
  • Ensure that the participants organise activities that address the issues they discuss in the forum
  • Ensure that the students are still actively involved in the programme during the summer

Highlights were:

  • Successful fund raising campaign to have an environmental summer camp
  • Snorkeling trip to the Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve
  • Numerous community clean-ups
  • Hike to the Emerald Pool at the Morne Trois Pitons UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Painting of garbage bins made from old drums
  • Planting of palm trees to beautify the school
  • Anti-drug poster competition

Achievements:

  • With the support of UNESCO, two computers were donated to the IT room and one was donated to the library
  • With the support of UNESCO, internet facilities are up and running
  • There are now 50 active members in the club with many prospective members
  • The students have organised and implemented numerous fund raisers
  • We have done numerous community clean-ups
  • We have adopted a site which was riddled with litter and it has been litter free for the last three months
  • A summer programme for the club has been developed to ensure the club remains united and active during the holidays

Challenges:

  • The local internet provider was very inefficient at getting the internet facilities in place
  • Many of the participants do not have access to the internet outside of the school
  • Some students dropped out after the delay with internet access
  • The internet facilities were set up very close to the final exams and the students had to devote their attention to their studies, particularly the 5th formers

Threats:

  • If the internet facilities are not up during the summer our programme will suffer

Looking ahead - plans for 2005-6

  • Launching a new membership campaign at the start of the school year targeting younger students
  • Launching of a fund raising campaign to ensure a larger environmental camp in 2006
  • Continued assemblies on environmental and cultural days
  • Development of a website for the group
  • Increased number of articles submitted by the school's participants
