STRENGTHENING CULTURAL IDENTITY THROUGH THE SIV YOUTH FORUM

In January 2006, students from the Small Islands Voice Club at the Goodwill Secondary School submitted an article for the SIV Youth Forum about their efforts to preserve their Creole culture (with username view and password only). There followed an interesting exchange with students from the Seychelles describing different aspects of their Creole culture and culminated with a request from Dominica: 'It would be great if we could establish an exchange program to experience and learn from our two festivals and enrich those of our nations when we return home'.

Through Youth Visioning for Island Living (www.youthvisoning.org), this exchange is scheduled for October-November 2006, when a youth from Dominica travels to Seychelles to learn about their Creole festival and then shares the findings with peers at home. A youth from Seychelles travels to Dominica with the same objective.

It is anticipated that these exchanges will lead to a strengthening of the Creole cultures in the two islands and particularly the involvement of youth.
