First
Youth World Summit on Sustainable Development, Cartagena, Colombia,
26-31 August 2003
Eight youth
from the San Andres Archipelago (six from San Andres and two from
Old Providence), each representing their school, participated
in the First Youth World Summit on Experiences and Initiatives
in Sustainable Development, in Cartagena, Colombia, from August
26th to 31st 2003. The students presented their projects and the
Small Islands Voice initiative, and they learnt about the experiences
of other young people working in sustainable development.
Camille Jackson
of Brooks Hill Bilingual School, San Andres, wrote of her experiences
at the Summit:
'For me
it was a great experience to participate in the First Youth World
Summit and exchange experiences and initiatives for sustainable
development. I got to meet other people from other parts of our
country and also from other parts of the world. We also got to
exchange ideas and opinions about sustainable development, and
to learn about some environmental projects. I would like to see
more students assisting in these kinds of programs so that we
could have more representatives of our island in a future summit'.
'Para mi
fue una buena experiencia asistir a la primera cumbre mundial
de experiencias e iniciativas de jóvenes para el desarrollo sostenible,
ante todo pude conocer personas de otros departamentos del país
y otras partes del mundo; pudimos intercambiar ideas y opiniones
sobre el desarrollo sostenible, también pudimos conocer sus proyectos
sobre el medio ambiente. Me gustaría ver mas estudiantes asistir
a este programa para tener una representación mas grande de la
Isla en una próxima cumbre'.
Topics discussed
at the Summit included sustainable agriculture and biodiversity,
energy, water, education, employment, information and communication.
Some of the students wrote about
their experiences (in Spanish).
Other Youth
leadership activities have included training workshops held with
youth groups in San Andrés and Old Providence in 2003 to develop
the leadership skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurship,
and fellowship necessary to create positive change. These are
jointly organised by CORALINA and Junior Chamber International
(Camara Junior de Colombia) www.juniorchamber.org
Workshops
on internet management were held on 5th and 12th August, 2003,
and on 26th and 27th November, 2003; and a workshop on project
management was held on 10th September 2003.
On the 19th
and 20th November 2003, a Future Search Conference was held on
the role of youth in the sustainable development of the Archipelago.
Forty students from 5 different educational centres in the island
participated. The conference was a success, and allowed the organisers
to identify the feeling and thinking of the group in regard to
the reality of this archipelago.
