Youth Forum |
Different schools in St. Kitts and Nevis have been
taking part in the Small Islands Voice Youth Internet Forum since
its inception in 2002. Subjects discussed range from life after
school to overcoming environmental challenges, and from abstaining
from sex before marriage to providing moral support to the tsunami
victims.
In 2004, students from Cayon High School wrote about
life
and love in their island: 'Regarding cultural problems, generally
youth do not know much about our local heritage. This is probably
because our local heritage is not emphasized in school or history
lessons. Not only that but the strong influence of the American
pop-culture is adversely affecting ours'.
They also wrote about some of the disadvantages of
living in a small island: 'Living in a small island like St. Kitts
also has its difficulties. For instance, rumour spreading occurs
in St. Kitts because of its small size. It is most serious, however,
when the issue or rumour is political. This is because generally
the people are politically divided, even in the same household.
Here in St. Kitts, many persons are employed in factories, which
mainly export goods to the U.S. markets. After the September 11
catastrophe in New York, a major factory closed operations and
over 250 persons lost their jobs. In a larger and more populous
country, this may have been insignificant. However, because of
our small size it was a major blow to our economy and society'.
