SIV CARNIVAL TROUPE PROMOTES NEW "CLEAN UP" CULTURE

Basseterre, St. Kitts (January 05, 2006): Spectators were given a positive environmental message when UNESCO Small Islands Voice in collaboration with the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) put on a special troupe on Carnival Parade Day, January 02, 2006.

The troupe, which came to the rear of the parade, "performed" behind a banner bearing the theme "Small Islands Voice and SWMC in the Carnival Mix, Promoting a new 'Clean Up' Culture for 2006."

The "performance" consisted of SIV members and SWMC representatives collecting the trash left behind by Carnival performers and spectators. Wearing latex gloves, SIV representatives used rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows to collect the debris before placing it in garbage bags which were then put in the SWMC garbage truck.

The Department of Health's Parks and Beaches Unit also collaborated with SIV by lending the "performers" the mentioned tools.
