CARIBBEAN - St. Kitts and Nevis Activities

Public voices its opinion on the closure of the sugar industry in St. Kitts

The miles of sugar cane, seen here at Wash Cut in 1995, may soon be a thing
of the past

The sugar train that was used to transport canes to the factory has now been transformed into a train ride for tourists

As the economy in St. Kitts shifts away from sugar production, everyone in the island is affected. The changes touch on history, culture, trade, globalisation, agriculture, tourism, environment, and indeed all aspects of everyday life.

During 2005, a series of Small Islands Voice opinion spots were aired on local radio, giving people from different walks of life the opportunity to express their personal feelings about the closure of the sugar industry.

Click on any of the short 2-minute audio clips listed below to hear what people think.

This important change in lifestyle in St. Kitts has also been profiled in other Small Islands Voice activities. For example a display board featuring the closure of the sugar industry was on view during the Florida Cruise Ship Association trade show in October 2005.
