Training
in 'Discover SCUBA'
On
6-7th August, 2003, fifteen Sandwatch students and two teachers
had an introductory course in SCUBA diving. This was a part of
the Sandwatch/Small Islands Voice activities in 2003 and was designed
to create an understanding of the relationship between the coral
reef, the undersea world and beach debris. The training started
with a fairly intense classroom session, followed by a nearshore
diving experience and instructions. Later on deeper dives on the
coral reef were conducted. Most students went to a maximum depth
of 43 feet.
Participants
were issued with certificates that entitle them to dive within
a one year period anywhere in the world with a PADI diver. The
students now have the option to return to the Bequia Dive Adventure
shop whenever they want, to continue their training.
The
students' letters of appreciation illustrate the value of their
experience in SCUBA diving, see also a newspaper article Bequia
youth stand out.
