Poetry
competition for Youth Visioning for Island Living
As one of
the activities to involve youth throughout the country in the
preparations for the Youth Visioning
for Island Living event to be held in Mauritius in January
2005, alongside the International Meeting on the review of the
Programme of Action for Small Island Developing States, a poetry
contest was held in May-June 2004, organised by the Bequia Community
High School. Exciting prizes
were offered by the local business community to the winners, including
weekends at resort hotels. The theme
of the contest centred around the marine or terrestrial environment
with emphasis on protection, preservation, conservation and sustainable
use.
Ms. Trachia
Simmons of Bequia Community High School was the first prize winner,
and she read her winning poem to an audience of more than 70 people
at a Town Hall Meeting in Bequia
on 17th June, 2004. Her poem, entitled 'Be environmentally friendly',
starts off as follows:
Have you
ever thought of the things we need in life?
Things to support our children,
Husband and wife?
These things are found above,
Below, before and behind us.
Yes my friends, the sea and our
Surroundings should be our main focus
