Town
Hall Meeting

Mr. Herman Belmar describing some of
the youth's activities to the audience
A Town Hall
Meeting was held on 17th June 2004 in Bequia organised by the
Sandwatch/Small Islands Voice National Coordinating Committee.
The objectives of this meeting, titled Youth Visioning for Island
Living, were:
- To present
the work of the youths in the preservation/protection of the
environment.
- To showcase
the work of youths in the UNESCO Youth Visioning for Sustainable
Island Living.
- To foster
a link between youth, the community and the private sector,
as we develop wise environmental practices leading up to the
UN's review of the Barbados Programme of Action for Small Island
Developing States
More than
70 members of the community listened to the varied evening's programme
that was reported in the press.
One of the main purposes of the meeting was to highlight the activities
of Bequian youth over the past few years, and to ask for the support
of the community to help them in these activities. Some of the
activities described were: using recycled
glass to make patio tiles and park benches, assessing the
status of the beaches after the
filming of the movie 'Pirates of the Caribbean', and to involve
other youth throughout the nation in Sandwatch and Small Islands
Voice. After the meeting, several local businesses pledged their
support for the youth.
