The Small Island Voice National Coordinating Committee presents a Programme of Activities towards Mauritius.


The Small Islands Voice National Coordinating Committee is pleased to announce t he following as a list of activities towards Mauritius in January 2005. These activities are designed to maximize on public participation especially among the youth. In the final analysis at least one of our youths will be selected to represent the country at the Sustainable Development Conference of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in Mauritius.

  1. Participants in a public awareness seminar sponsored by JEMS Environmental Management Services on May 7th, 2004, designed to sensitize and educate members of community youth organizations on matters pertaining to the environment. Specific topics dealt with: "Biodiversity," "Ozone Depletion & Climate Change."

  2. Participate in the National Fisherman's Day Essay Competition and Beach Clean up campaign, on May 22nd - 23rd, 2004. (Sandwatch Students won the Second Place Trophy)

  3. Organize a Poetry Competition to highlight the involvement of youths in Environmental protection and Preservation.

  4. Seek a meeting with the Minister of Education to map the way forward. (Meeting Outcome: We should list six individuals from whom at least one would be named for Mauritius).

  5. Host a Town Hall meeting on 17th June 2004 to project the work of Youth in the Visioning Process for Island Living.

  6. Join the Ministry of Education and Youth Affairs in hosting a National Conference on the Theme "Youth Visioning for Island Living - Towards Mauritius in 2005" on August 12th 2004. (Invitations will be sent to other participating schools, various ministries e.g. Ministry of Culture, Tourism, Health & the Environment, Fisheries & Forestry).
