The Republic
of Mauritius consists of two main islands: Mauritius and Rodrigues
(see map below), located in the Indian Ocean approximately 800
km east of Madagascar. The total land area is 2,040 km2. The capital
city is Port Louis. The population is 1,186,058 (2000 estimated
figures) and is descended from Indian and Chinese peoples, with
a small influence from Africans and Europeans. The official language
is English, while Creole and French are also widely spoken. The
local currency is the Mauritian rupee.
